Episode 4
Joy Bryant
She's not Dax's wife in real life, but she was married to him on TV (Parenthood). You may also recognize her from the movie Antwone Fisher. Joy comes by the attic to talk about the fun times they shared on the set of Parenthood and share stories about how she ended up in Hollywood.
What's this all about?
The theme of this episode can be summed up in a phrase Joy says during the podcast. “Get in where you fit in.” For both her and Dax that is exactly what lead them to their success. Joy’s story is about learning how to find your way through two different worlds, where you are not always certain of people’s expectations. She eventually does fit in and becomes a successful actress.
What did they say?
- @16:29 “You’re like Hemingway, there’s no flourish, it’s just all truth.” Joy discusses with Dax how she felt out of place within the black community in the Bronx.
- @29:34 “You’re being an egomaniac, no one in here is thinking about you” Dax tries to understand what it must feel like to be a black person in a predominately white school. He imagines that Joy must have felt like all eyes were on her while at school. She says that wasn’t her experience.
- @36:56 “I’m unique in all of these places.” Joy talks about how she became comfortable in both her boarding school in Connecticut, and the Bronx.
- @41:35 “I appreciate you saying code switching” Joy and Dax relate over having to change between two different lifestyles.
- @48:15 “You only got in because your 1% Cherokee.” This is where Joy says “Get in where you fit in.” after being told that she only was accepted into Yale because of her skin color. Joy points out that she made it into Yale because of her hard work.
- @1:06:58 “If I had to pick from that whole crew who I would sleep with it would be Seth Rogen.” Joy believes that sleeping with Seth Rogen would be a much richer experience over James Franco.
- @1:30:03 “Ain’t nobody going to see the King’s Speech!” Dax and Joy discuss how black movies that would get nominated for awards like the Oscars are not being made because no one ever goes to see them. Joy points out that many Oscar award winning movies are not really that popular either.
- @1:59:30 “What’s a car note?” The car payment vs. car note debate rages on.
