Episode 13

Katie Couric

Dax gets America's Sweetheart to join him in the attic for a chat about her life and career in news. She's worked for CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN....I think we get the point right? She's considered one of the best interviewers in the news business, and now she gets to meet with one of the best podcasters in the business.

What's this all about?

Katie’s episode is not an easy one to sum up. This is one of the more touching interviews Dax has done, and may be tough for some people sensitive to conversations about cancer and love ones passing away. We did not dissect most of this conversation since it is a very personal and intimate one. Please listen here.

What did they say?

  • @1:08 “There was so much pot smoke in the car.”  Dax tells Monica the story about how he was confronted by two guys in a car that were not happy about how fast Dax was going in his car. He then realizes that these two guys are both high from smoking pot. Dax examines his growth in how he handled the confrontation and credits the documentary Wild Wild Country with helping him, learn how to deescalate a situation.
  •  @9:18 “I worked at CNN before it even started.” Katie talks about her early beginnings and meeting Ted Turner.
  • @11:40 “Monica and I were just at a live podcast at the Dolby Center.” Dax talks about attending a live Sam Harris podcast with Stephen Pinker.
  • @15:12 “I’m doing a whole hour for National Geographic on this.” Katie talks about how she is worked on a docu-series for National Geographic and one of the programs is dealing with the current topic they are talking about, heightened cultural sensitivity. The title of the episode is “The Age of Outrage”, and you can watch it here.
  • @35:01 “I don’t even know the stereotype that Jews love music.” Katie tells a story about Morty Shapiro, the president of Northwestern University. The story revolves around an incident where someone says that Morty must love a marching band since his people love music so much. Dax has never heard about this stereotype before.
  • @38:17 “You famously asked Sarah Palin the question what magazines or newspapers are you reading to start your day.” Katie talks about her famous “gotcha” question to Sarah Palin. Dax and Katie talk about their current feelings towards Sarah Palin and how with Dax they have changed dramatically.
  • @54:21 “These are the ideas you have that you happen to support or not support.” Dax talks about identifying with a political party and how people use that as part of their identity and why that is wrong.
  • The remainder of this conversation has to do with Katie’s husband passing away and her work promoting colon cancer awareness.

These are the facts...

  • @1:37:33 The Fact Check begins
  • Monica clears up something from the last Fact Check. Whooping Cough is not Tuberculosis.
